Salary: 263,400-298,500RMB(dependent upon experience)
Background:
Compassion in World Farming International was founded in 1967 in England by Peter Roberts, a British farmer who was concerned by the development of intensive farming. Over 50 years ago, Peter decided to make a difference and take a stand against this farming system. In his lifetime, Peter saw the demise of veal crates and gestation crates in the UK, and in Europe achieved recognition that animals are sentient beings.
Part 1: JOB PROFILE
OVERALL OBJECTIVE(S) OF THE POST
The purpose of this role is to help develop and deliver our China Food Business technical workstream. This role will contribute by being the technical animal welfare expert lead within China, able to deliver and follow up on the Good Production Awards programme. You will play a pivotal role in the design and delivery of a variety of technical resources that engage, influence and raise awareness of animal welfare problems and solutions for our corporate partners. You will also be the expert in external meetings with corporate partners and develop knowledge both internally and externally through capacity building and training. Our focus in China is primarily on laying hens, broilers, sows and meat pigs – and company policies and practices to improve and measure welfare.
POSITION IN ORGANISATION
Reports to the Chief China Representative based in Beijing
Matrix managed by the China Senior Research Manager based in Europe / UK
Liaises with the Senior Research Manager and Head of Food Business Asia, specifically on awards process / sign off; resource development; projects, and research plans, based in the UK.
Close collaboration with and support of the China Food Business Manager
Develops strong and effective working relationships with Academics/Producers/industry groups/NGO’s in China
SCOPE OF JOB
Deliver the China Good Production Awards programme in conjunction with our partner in China (ICCAW)
Deliver technical resources in Chinese for knowledge transfer to our corporate partners
Provide technical support to the China Food Business Manager during corporate outreach
Develop positive relationships within Compassion and with key external contacts
Act as one of Compassions Representatives to external audiences in China
Communicate effectively with diverse audiences
DIMENSIONS & LIMITS OF AUTHORITY
Responsible for day-to-day management and implementation of the China Food Business research and technical programme
Contributes to departmental and cross-organisational planning, project management and implementation
Responsible for operational management of designated China research budget on a day-to-day basis as directed by the China Senior Research Manager

Proven Ability, Qualifications & Training | |
· Proven knowledge of farm animal welfare science · Educated to advanced degree (MSc. or PhD) level or equivalent in a relevant discipline (such as, but not limited to, animal welfare and behaviour, animal production, psychology, zoology, veterinary medicine) · Demonstrable experience of working with or in the food industry, farming or related industries · Proven knowledge and experience of farm animal management, standards and practices · Practical experience of farming (pigs / poultry) · Understand the China agricultural situation · Good IT skills including Microsoft Office applications, presentation tools and Internet | · Proven knowledge of supply chain analysis · Proven knowledge of sustainability science and policy issues · Business studies (with relevance to food business) · Some proficiency in the use of Salesforce, Document Manager, Asset Bank

Part 2: DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following: Other duties may be assigned.
Deliver China research and technical programme 25%
To support the development and deliver the ongoing development of the Food Business research and technical programme in China, with direction from the China Senior Research Manager, and Head of Food Business Asia.
Plan and implement projects, both individually and in partnership with other stakeholders (e.g. food industry) which maximise Compassion’s effectiveness in working with the food industry to raise baseline standards for farm animal welfare
Develop, update and maintain effective farm animal welfare research and information resources related to food business
Undertake research in diverse areas relevant to food business, in particular supply chain analysis, country and market intelligence, as well species-specific issues
Respond positively and effectively to supporter and other external comments and queries
Record information re: relationship management and actions on appropriate databases in a timely manner
Provide technical support to the China Food Business Manager 15%
Support the China Food Business Manager to maximise the impact of their relationship with food companies by, for example, accompanying them on farm visits and meetings and by providing ad-hoc technical advice
Assist when needed in the development, planning and delivery of effective projects undertaken by China Food Business Manager in partnership with food companies to address specific animal welfare or business-related issues
Provide technical support for a range of external partnership projects in collaboration with China Food Business Manager
Provide technical support for the Business Benchmark for Animal Welfare (BBFAW)
Deliver China awards programme 30% To take the lead, working with colleagues in the China Food Business team and our China partner, the International Cooperation Committee of Animal Welfare (ICCAW) to verify and award new winners for our Good Egg, Chicken and Pig Production Awards.
Ensure databases are up to date with winners information and logos, and trophies and certificates are provided to the winners.
Follow up effectively and timely on commitments from previous award winners.
To identify and implement improvements to the process, and opportunities for greater impact of the Good Production Awards.
Ensure the China Food Business Manager is involved in meetings and up to speed with farm winners of key and influential producers.
Develop positive relationships within Compassion and with key external contacts 10%
Contribute to the organisation’s wider farm animal welfare knowledge from a research and technical perspective via the Technical Working Group.
Contribute to the team’s strategic planning and processes via team workshops and reviews.
Ensure strategic planning processes have sufficient research / information resources to work effectively.
Build and maintain constructive internal and external relationships with ICCAW, consultants, practitioners and other stakeholders in the scientific, economic, technical, business and related environments
Ensure social and cultural issues are dealt with sensitively and respectfully
Act as Compassions Representative externally 10%
Provide scientific, technical and policy comment to journalists and the wider media when required
Ensure research resources are available so the organisation can respond quickly and effectively to media queries
Give presentations / workshops / papers / other communications on behalf of Compassion to food businesses, academic conferences, and other environments as directed by the China Senior Research Manager and Head of Food Business Asia
Communicate effectively with diverse audiences 10%
Develop clear agreed briefs, workplans and budgets for resource development
Plan, develop and deliver resources which meet the China Food Business information requirements, and adhere to the wider messaging and policies of the organisation, to time and budget
Communicate effectively with diverse audiences via a range of media, including information sheets, the China Food Business website, building case studies, reports, journal articles, and trade media copy and video.
Liaise with team members, consultants and others to develop research and content for communications
